Sídney, 13 de julio de 2026.- El actor Sam Neill murió el lunes 13 de julio en Sídney a los 78 años. Su fallecimiento fue anunciado mediante un comunicado publicado por su familia en la cuenta de Instagram del actor.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free”, indicó el mensaje familiar. En abril, el actor había anunciado que había vencido al cáncer después de cinco años de tratamiento. Sam Neill padecía linfoma en estadio III, un tipo de cáncer de sangre.
Su nombre real era Nigel John Dermot Neill. Nació en 1947 en Omagh, Irlanda del Norte; su madre era británica y su padre neozelandés. En 1954, su familia se mudó a Nueva Zelanda. Adoptó el nombre Sam porque había muchos niños llamados Nigel en su escuela. Asistió a la escuela y la universidad en la ciudad de Christchurch, Nueva Zelanda, donde estudió literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Canterbury.
Comenzó su carrera actoral en el Downstage Theatre de Wellington y su debut cinematográfico fue en ‘Sleeping Dogs’ (1977). Alcanzó fama internacional por interpretar al Dr. Alan Grant en ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993). Sobre aquella producción, Neill comentó: “At least back then we had giant puppets, although in other scenes the only reference point we had to look at was a tennis ball tied to a stick that Steven Spielberg was holding and moving around. In fact, in Jurassic Park all the sets were real, but now you walk onto the set and there are only green screens all around you. They put you on a green platform and you have to imagine everything that will be added digitally later. It’s not much fun. I’m not a big fan”.
Respecto a su cambio de identidad, el actor explicó: “I think, looking back, that was a reordering of myself. I once heard that acting is pretending to be someone else, but pretending with great sincerity. At first I pretended to be a New Zealander, but I pretended with great sincerity because I was a skinny, stammering boy called Nigel in a place where, if you sounded like a Nigel, you’d get a slap round the ear. So I decided to stop sounding like a Nigel, I changed my voice and behaved differently”.
Además de su trabajo actoral, era viticultor y poseía cuatro viñedos. “I’m a winegrower; I own four vineyards, and I’m very attached to my grapes, my animals, and my family. So in that respect, my life is entirely predictable, marked by the four seasons”, dijo en una ocasión. Sobre su sentido del humor, también declaró: “Of course, because who would dare to eat a cow called Susan Sarandon?”.
